Website Hosting and Domain Registration
One of the first steps in creating a website is registering a domain name and setting up hosting services.
A domain name gives you a unique presence on the world wide web. It allow users to type in www.YourDomainName.com and go directly to your website. You can choose any name you like for a domain name, as long as it's not already in use. The most common domain name extension is .com but .net, .org, and many others are also available.
You can check domain name availability here. Domain registrations are paid on a yearly basis. Once you register a domain, it is forever yours as long as you pay the registration fee each year. If you let your registration lapse, then that domain may be purchased by someone else. In essence, you are just "leasing" a domain name - no one really owns a domain name.
After registering your domain name, the next step is to set up hosting services. Many domain names come with 5 meg of free hosting space. For a simple site using HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript, I highly recommend Register4Less.com as your domain registrar and website host. They provide excellent service at a great price and have a fantastic track record for up-time. Sometimes when you try to access a site and you can't (but you can access other sites), that means the site's hosting servers are down - this rarely happens with Register4Less.com. And Register4Less.com provides domain registration and 5 meg of hosting space for only $14.95 per YEAR. Many other simple hosting services charge more than this on a MONTHLY basis. Five meg of space is actually quite a lot and even if you need more space, Register4Less.com's rates for additional space are very reasonable.
If you want a website that relies on a database and PHP or ASP programming, then you will need to use a different hosting service because Register4Less.com doesn't support that level of complexity. There are a myriad of web hosting services available at all sorts of prices and service levels. Issues to consider are pricing, technical support, up-time, version levels of PHP and MySQL, services offered, etc.
